Portuguesa ou Inglesa? Eis a questão!

Portuguese or English? That is the question!
I get asked a lot whether I consider myself Portuguese or English, and I usually say that on one hand, I grew up in Portugal so I’m more Portuguese but then on the other hand, my parents are English and I grew up with an English culture at home. In reality, my way of being and my lifestyle have a mixture of both cultures and therefore I don’t feel like I’m one thing or the other. Besides this, I have a Brazilian/Portuguese husband, who likes English culture a lot!
So, in what ways are we more Portuguese as a family?
1 - Food: We like Portuguese food and we eat quite a few Portuguese dishes. Besides this, we also have the habit of making food from scratch (this is more common here in Portugal). Besides this, we usually sit at the table to eat together, which seems to be more common here than in the UK.
2- Work schedules: Being that we live in Portugal we need to follow Portuguese work timetables and therefore my husband has an hour and a half for lunch and finishes at 7 p.m. I also do my work schedule later because of that and also because my hubby comes home for lunch.
3- More laid-back lifestyle: I think life is more laid-back here in Portugal and when friends and family get together, for instance, they’ll spend hours together whilst it seems that people are more in a hurry in the UK because they have so many different things on. So, in that regard I would say we are more Portuguese although now we are a bit more restricted with our daughter’s routines.
So, in what ways do we do things in more of an English way?
1 - Our daughter’s routine: I think we are more English in this regard because we put our daughter down at 8 p.m., which some people here find a bit strange. So if dad only arrives home at 7 why does she go to bed so early? Well, from what we’ve noticed about her and what we’ve read on the subject babies are at their best with a lot of sleep and with going to bed early. Some people even advocate 7 p.m. as the best time but we decided on 8 so that she could see her dad a bit after he arrives from work. It is also because dad isn’t with her much in the evening that he drives back home for lunch! Another advantage of her going to bed at 8 is that we can have some couple time before we go to bed, which leads me to...
2- Our meal times and sleep times: Many Portuguese people find it strange that we have dinner at around 7 and go to bed at 10.30/11 but these choices work well for us as it helps for us to wake-up feeling rested and our dinner time in the evening enable us to all eat together.
3- Simple meals: We don’t mind if one of our meals is something simple like soup, salad and sandwiches. This isn’t something that happens every day because we sometimes have food left over that we can heat up but we don’t mind having something simple either.
So, as you can see, our lifestyle is a bit of a mixture of different cultures because of what suits our particular circumstances.
