Supermulher
Superwoman
So, this week I thought I would write about superwoman. No, not the one from the comics. This superwoman is the one created by the culture around us, a concept of who the perfect woman is:
1 - Always beautiful and glamorous (new and elegant clothes, glossy hair that looks like it’s just been under the care of a top-notch hairdresser, flawless make-up), her husband looks sleek and modern and her kids are always well-dressed (with branded clothes and no trace of stains or dirt anywhere).
2 - Super busy with a challenging career and with her children at the best day-care and public schools with many extra-curricular activities to keep them busy.
3 - The perfect housewife that make meals that make gorgeous Instagram and Pinterest photos and whose house is never dusty, dirty or messy. The laundry basket is always empty and clothes are washed, ironed and smell lovely, cupboards are well organized and toys are all in their proper places.
4- Her children are well-behaved, calm and never show any signs of tiredness, hyperactivity, aggressiveness or anything that could attract attention from others for bad reasons.
5 - Superwoman also has a very active social life, she goes to parties and takes lots of selfies with her husband, she dines out and goes to the cinema while nanny looks after her children.
6 - She is very concerned about being environmentally friendly and she recycles everything, uses bio cotton and her baby wears cloth nappies.
7 - Her food at home is super healthy, mostly made from organic and posh ingredients. Superwoman makes delicious meals and fantastic cakes (just for special occasions).
8 - Superwoman also organizes social and charitable events, thus feeling that she truly has an impact on society.
This superwoman concept is all very well but is it realistic? Can it be that the superwoman concept just makes women feel bad because they can’t follow those standards?
I believe so. There is a lot of pressure on women (in particular) to excel in everything they do and to do everything under the sun. You know, I do agree that we should do our best in our tasks but I don’t think it’s realistic to expect a woman to do all the abovementioned things, all the time and well.
Yes, the things I described are good. I’m not saying they’re not. I think it’s very good for women and mothers in particular to try and make healthy food for their families, try to raise their children well and try to be environmentally friendly (after all I’m one of those mums that bought cloth nappies for her daughter).
However, we also have to be aware that we’re not perfect and that in life we go through different seasons: seasons where routines change, seasons of illness, seasons of a lot of work and tasks, seasons where you need to step back and just take a break. In those seasons things around us will not be according to that ideal standard.
Also, our children may not always behave the way we would like and may embarrass us when we’re with others, even if they are raised well at home.
We’ll have weeks in which we have so much going on that maybe we won’t have time to make those delicious meals we had planned or maybe we won’t even have time to go shopping.
We’ll have days when our kids will dirty their clothes when we’re out and we forget to bring some replacement clothes with us because we slept badly the night before and we just can’t think straight.
And there will be times when our hormones will not allows us to have that sleek, glossy hair and we won’t have enough money to buy that make-up we like or that cute fashionable outfit.
No problem. The most important thing that a woman can have is this: God’s unconditional love.
Yes, God loves us when we aren’t perfect (all the time, right?). God loves us although we don’t follow the high standards of a superwoman. God loves us even though there are many people who judge us, because we don’t do things “just so”. God loves us when our kids misbehave and He loves us when we do things that aren’t good for the planet He created, and He loves us when we don’t give the best food to our children and He loves us when we do things that hurt people around us. He loves us unconditionally.
Although we’re not perfect, He makes us perfect through Jesus, the life that He led. We need to give Him our lives and ask for Him to forgive us for our mistakes and trust in Jesus, who did everything to make us perfect before God.
