Why am I a SAHM?
First of all, SAHM stands for Stay At Home Mum and that’s what I currently do and hope to continue doing for the first 4 to 5 years of each of my kids lives. That means that in total I may be a SAHM for about 8 to 9 years if I have three kids with 2 year gaps in between them.
The question that some people have been asking me is why.
Is it because I happen to be able to work from home as a translator and a Private English Language Teacher? That helps but actually I had already decided I wanted to be a SAHM before I realised I could do part-time work from home.
Is it because I simply can’t get a full-time job elsewhere? Nope! I’ve had offers but refused them!
Is it because I don’t see myself as academically or professionally gifted? Nope! I finished Uni with good grades and I’ve had good feedback on my professional performance.
Is it because I don’t like my profession enough to give 100% of myself to it? Again no! I love teaching and also doing most translation work (I say most because I have had some boring texts to translate on the odd occasion haha). Also, the buzz that comes from working and being in a professional environment is pretty cool.
I guess that the simple answer is that I consider my calling to be that of a mother (a role given to me by God himself) and as a good steward I believe it’s the right place for me to be.
I believe that for as long as it’s possible, it’s important to give my time (quantity is important as well as quality) and attention to my children and to be the main person in their lives as I do believe children are extremely influenced, guided and educated by those around them. I believe that true education is something that starts and mainly occurs at home and as a parent you have an amazing influence over the lives of your children. As a Christian, I believe that the influence of a Godly mother (even one who makes mistakes!) is worth more than learning Mandarin at the age of three or being at the best childcare centre in the country.
Also, I want to be the one who sees my children’s firsts and who knows first-hand what’s going on with them.
Now, I know it’s not possible for many mums to be at home with their kids but I know that many would understand me when I say that who you leave your kids with is of extreme importance. To be honest, if I had to leave my children with someone I would rather leave them with close friends or family. Again, not everyone has this possibility but I think that if you do, you should take the opportunity and if you have the possibility of being with your kids yourself, you should definitely go for it.
As a SAHM I may not be able to give my children some things that other children have like expensive clothes or a private school education and maybe my kids won’t go as much to the theatre or to museums. Maybe we will have to spend our holidays at home instead of going abroad and maybe we won’t even be able to do much else in the holidays than day trips. Maybe my kids won’t get the chance to eat at restaurants as much as some kids or to go on cool courses or do many extra-curricular activities. Even though those things are all nice I want my children to have things that I consider as more valuable: family, time together, simple enjoyment of the simple things in life and a true appreciation for the things they have! But most of all, I want them to be brought up in a family where God is the centre and they learn about Him and His provision more than they learn about how the financial crisis is going to destroy their chances of one day getting a job, which obviously I don’t believe will happen because they have a Father who looks after them.
So, if you are in a place where you have the option of deciding what to do, whether to stay-at-home or go to work, I would definitely recommend staying at home.
I know some mums love the idea of being with their kids more but they are afraid that staying at home will be boring and/or that there will be financial implications but if finance is the problem, pray about it and maybe God will open a door for you (maybe work from home or maybe an increase in revenue from elsewhere or simply cutting back on non-essentials). In our case, all of the above happened!
On the other hand, if you’re afraid that being at home will be boring or lonely (I used to be afraid of this) remember that your attitude towards staying at home is guided by your principles. If you really do believe it is the best thing for your family, you will be able to find ways to make it work and your attitude towards it will be good. Yes, you may have bad days but so do people who work in offices, etc. The main thing is that you’re doing what you believe to be right. Drudgery comes about when you’re not motivated and you’re doing things half-heartedly but if you stay at home with an attitude of serving God and others (including your children) and give yourself 100% there’s little room for anything else but purpose and peace. In practical terms, you can set goals for yourself in terms of home life and set about achieving them and you can make the most of every opportunity to meet up with other people, even if that means just going out shopping a few times a week so that you can speak to people (if there aren’t any activities for mums with kids or you don’t know many people that are free in the week) and going out with your husband for date night or at the weekend.
Also, being at home doesn’t mean that you need to throw your intellect out of the window as you can spend some time each week (even if this is only possible when your kids are in bed or at the weekend) reading, researching, writing, or doing whatever stimulates your intellect. You can also try taking up a hobby and do it when there is family around to babysit. If you’re in a church you can also take the opportunity of serving and being more involved.
Finally, being a SAHM is hard work but it is rewarding so embrace it as a challenge as well as a great privilege.
